WINCHES

When pulling a boat onto a trailer you need a winch with capacity matched to the weight of the
boat. The standard 1600 lb. winch used on many trailers should be able to handle a 2500 lb. boat because much of the boat is floating. The difficulty is when the boat is on the trailer and the winch has to pull the last few feet over the carpeted bunks. The winch is pulling the entire weight of the boat. Which is why or standard front winch is rated at 3200 lb.

The raising and lowering winch has different stresses. It lifts through pulleys. The more pulleys the less stress on the winch. A 1500 lb. winch should lift 4500 lb. with the assistance of three pulleys.
